{"id":3116,"date":"2022-08-26T20:00:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-27T00:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cafethorium.whoi.edu\/?p=3116"},"modified":"2026-01-12T12:41:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T17:41:23","slug":"more-data-needed-before-ocean-water-release-of-fukushima-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/website.whoi.edu\/cafethorium\/more-data-needed-before-ocean-water-release-of-fukushima-water\/","title":{"rendered":"More data needed before ocean water release of Fukushima water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/opinion\/2022\/08\/26\/commentary\/japan-commentary\/radioactive-water-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new commentary<\/a> in the Japan Times by Ken Buesseler, highlights that the full extent of the radioactive isotopes in water in the tanks stored\u00a0 at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant require more study before the water is dumped into the ocean.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Nuclear Regulatory Authority last month announced its approval for the discharge of more than 1 million tons of contaminated water from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant directly into the ocean.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Japan\u2019s nuclear regulator has stated that this can be done safely and the International Atomic Energy Agency has supported this position.
